The Mano River Union (MRU) is an intergovernmental organization with a Secretariat based in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It was established in October 1973 by the Presidents of Liberia and Sierra Leone, taking its name from a river that runs along the border between the two countries. The MRU was formed as a customs union, to promote economic growth, social progress, and cultural advancement through trade promotion. Over time, this mandate has been expanded to include agriculture, communications, natural resources, education, social services, industry, transport, monetary matters, and security cooperation.

Guinea joined the MRU in 1980 and Côte d’Ivoire in 2008. These four countries together form the MRU sub-region and not only share borders, but also have significant historical, cultural, and social similarities, including a common tribal makeup and traditions.

Our Vision

MRU’s vision is to ensure the establishment of a peaceful, stable, and prosperous sub-region, and MRU’s mission is to design and implement programs that improve the well-being and living standards for the peoples of the sub-region while maintaining peace and stability.
